olive design 2nd Annual Lamp Salon, 10.29.06

Mary Van Vliet started olive design over 8 years ago after successful careers as a fabric designer and decorative painter. Her interior design business has grown organically, but rapidly. Her clients find out about her business through the glowing word of mouth recommendations of current clients. And once an olive design client always an olive design client.

Mary’s non-intimidating work style and highly competitive rates allow home owners to relax and enjoy the process of making their houses more beautiful, comfortable and functional. In addition to her interior design services, Mary also makes and sells her own private label lamps. Her one-of-a-kind creations have attracted a devoted following in her Brooklyn neighborhood. The designs range from the whimsical and funky to elegant vintage classics. See some of her work on her recently launched website at www.olivedesignNY.com.

On Sunday, October 29th from 1:00 to 5:00 pm come to the second Fall
olive design Lamp Salon located at 209 Westminster Road, Brooklyn, NY.

No matter what your decor or budget, olive design Lamps will brilliantly illuminate
your house, apartment or office. Over 100 lamps in every color, material, and size will be on display, ready to plug in and turn on. Let olive design
Lamps light up your life with style. Bring friends and neighbors, too! —Mary Kay Seery

Mary asked me to design her website and hooked me up with Bill Indursky of Flashcap.com who put it all together. Bill designed a site for Clare Donahue of 121studio who I featured here on urbanseashell—a collection in August 2006.
Tell Mary I sent you and enjoy shopping.

NORA MCCARTHY

Nora is a New York based singer and vocal improviser, composer, lyricist, poet, and actress. She has produced and released two CDs red&blue (1996) and A Small Dream In Red (2005). In addition to her Qu'ART'et, Nora leads and co-leads several music groups:
The
Conceptual Motion 20-piece Orchestra (which opened the VisionFestival X in 2005);
A Small Dream In Red -- Voice and Saxophone Duo; The ACE
(Afro-Caribbean-Experimental) Collective -- with alto saxophonist, Jorge Sylvester; and, the Beyond Words Voice and Bass Duo w/ Dominic Duval.

In addition, Nora hosts a monthly creative series at The Cornelia Street Cafe called "The Sidhe" -- People Of Peace, that features her various creative projects as well as some of New York's finest musicians, poets and visual artists. She participates in the annual Charlie Parker Festival held at The Gathering of the Tribes Gallery founded by Steve Cannon. Her various musical groups can be heard at many jazz and creative venues throughout New York City. Ms. McCarthy teaches privately and conducts workshops in vocal improvisation and assists master conductor Lawrence D. 'Butch' Morris with the Chorus of Poets and has been a participant of the Chorus since early 2005.

An innovator and song stylist, Nora combines an innate sense of harmony and phrasing with an astute understanding of sound, abstract form and design making her a leader in vocal improvisation today.

"...Her shaping of pitch often foregoes the fluid note-bending of the jazz singer in favor of the full press of a sculptor's touch against viscous clay."
—RAMSEY AMEEN
