In addition to the regular Tuesday night seisiúns at Dempsey’s Pub in NYC, upcoming events for the year include the Savannah Irish Festival in February, both the North Texas Irish Festival in Dallas and the Manchester Irish Festival in England in March, a screening in San Diego for St. Patrick’s week-end, and the Rocky Mountain Irish Festival in Ft. Collins, Colorado around Labor Day.

Tracks from the cd have been playing on radio stations WCWA on “The Echoes of Ireland” with John Connelly out of Toledo, Ohio; WCUW on “Four Green Fields” with Bud Sargent out of Worcester, Mass; and WSOU on “The Celtic Heritage Hour” with Joe Vogel out of Seton Hall University in New Jersey.

We’re also in talks to attend The Ottawa Irish Fest in March, The Penn-Mar Irish Festival in June, the Arizona Highland Celtic Festival in July,
the Milwaukee Irish Festival and the Minnesota Irish Fair in August, as well as an event with the Irish American Society of Tidewater, Virginia.

Not to mention those we still haven't heard back from, the schedule is full of open dates to host an event.

The celebrated Belgian 15-piece big band Flat Earth Society, known throughout Europe for their raucously playful jazz style, will perform an original score for Ernst Lubitsch’s 1919 film comedy, The Oyster Princess, at Museum of the Moving Image. The event on Friday, May 20, 2011, at 8:00 p.m., in the Museum’s beautiful new 267-seat film theater, marks the U. S. premiere of the performance, which has been seen at major festivals in Europe and Central America. The group will also present excerpts from their latest project, Hearsee, an ever-mutating audiovisual montage of composed and improvised music accompanying archival film clips.

I just returned from a conference in Baltimore, MD. I chose not to bring my laptop because it was another heavy thing to carry. I thought I would have access to my email at the site via another computer. I don't have a blackberry or android so I am relegated to a computer for this information. My access was limited and I felt a sense of relief and an odd feeling of disconnect.

I could not help think of the disconnect the people in Japan must feel who have lost everything. While Japan may not want our help I cannot stop thinking about the individual without a means of communication and I have been trying to figure out a way to help someone stay connected.

On my train ride back to NY on Saturday I was reading the NY Times. There in the first section was an ad for Eton Corp who has partnered with the Red Cross with the answer I was looking for.

Purchase an Emergency Radio equipped with a built in battery and cell phone charger for someone in Japan. The radio is activated by a crank. I own a similar one myself and they are great to have. No batteries needed. Cost to me? Peace of mind that someone I don't know will now have a means to remain connected in this terrible crisis.

It's that busy time of the year once again when shops are crowded, parking scarce (even metered spaces), with lines at the post office getting longer and longer, and a myriad of things to do with not enough time...

If you're thinking about that special gift, whether it be for your own home or for someone else who enjoys a one of a kind, handmade ceramic vase, cup, bowl, pitcher, dessert or sushi plate, tray or serving piece, and you'd prefer a more convenient and cozy place to shop, consider a visit to my home pottery show. Here you will be able to take your coat off, view, touch and hold, and then make your selection while you also enjoy a cup of holiday cheer. You are also welcome to come to just have a look, rest your weary feet and brain, and get to see what I've been doing. My home show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, December 11th and 12th from noon to 5pm. My prices are reasonable as I'm looking to make space for new work.

Stages’ 16th Annual Halloween Bash!

Stages, A Children’s Theatre Workshop, Inc. is throwing the Halloween Bash you and your children won’t want to miss! The main event is Frankenstein Follies, a Halloween-themed musical review directed and choreographed by Helene Leonard. Frankenstein Follies features all your favorite monsters and ghouls with a cast of forty-five local young performers.

There will be Halloween fun for young and old, including face painting, a "tattoo" parlor, a crazy fortune teller and a terrifyingly tasty treat bar for the scary sweet tooth in us all. Now returning for its sixteenth year, Frankenstein Follies has become a favorite on the East End.

We’ve added a show! Join the fun at the Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor on Friday, October 22nd at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 23rd at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, October 24th at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15, which include the show and the fun carnival bash immediately following the show. Saturday, October 23, from 12 to 2 p.m.

Joining him is the illustrator of the book, John O'Brien. John is a longtime illustrator and cartoonist for the New Yorker. The two have never met, and this will be their first time
talking about the book and signing copies.

Blockhead is a children's picture book about the famous, real-life mathematician who discovered the Fibonacci Sequence, the number pattern which governs how so many objects in nature grow and flourish. The book is set in Italy and the world of the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages.

While the range is approximately grades 2 to 6, older kids can use it in a service learning project with younger students. Teachers and librarians like it because it's a perfect jumping-off point for teaching number patterns. If you are a teacher, I can direct you to some easy lesson plans as well.

The most exciting news? Just this past weekend we were reviewed in the New York Times Book Review!

If you have kids or grandkids, this event might be a fun thing to do for a Saturday. The bookstore is amazing, and right next store is the Cupcake Cafe. So bring the kids, or pass this on to someone else who has kids. And yes, if you have a book you bought at another store and want them to sign, yes, the author/illustrator can sign it for you, just off Books of Wonder's premises.

‘DAVID MAMET, A LIFE IN FILM’:
MOVING IMAGE PRESENTS A RARE PERSONAL APPEARANCE BY

At New School Tishman Auditorium, on October 13, 2010, 7:00 p.m.

David Mamet may be best known as one of America’s most influential and important contemporary playwrights (American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross, Speed-The-Plow). Yet he has also had a remarkable career in film, as a director and screenwriter. On Wednesday, October 13, Museum of the Moving Image will present “David Mamet: A Life in Film,” featuring a very rare New York appearance by Mamet to discuss his career in film accompanied by clips. The event, which takes place at the New School’s Tishman Auditorium, coincides with the Broadway premiere of A Life in the Theatre, and will be moderated by Chief Curator David Schwartz.

Tickets for “David Mamet, A Life in Film” are $18 public/$12 for Museum members (Free for Sponsor-level and above). Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.movingimage.us or by calling 718.777.6800.

Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre will have its Broadway premiere on October 12 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, starring Sir Patrick Stewart and T.R. Knight and directed by Neil Pepe. The play was previously presented in New York in an Off Broadway production in 1977.

Mari Lowery: About Me
My work spans many different subjects, but this exhibit focuses on my work with dolls and masks. With this collection, I'm debuting several images from an ongoing series of photographs of small figures and dolls, taken with a plastic camera called a Holga, expired polaroid film, and a macro lens. I'm excited about this collection, as it's the first time that I have shown many of these pieces in public.

New Component of The Living Room Candidate,
Going Online on August 24, Allows Users to
Understand Political Ads by Creating Their Own

The Living Room Candidate: Presidential Campaign Commercials, 1952–2008 (http://livingroomcandidate.org) is a curated archive and interactive database containing more than 500 commercials from every presidential election since Dwight Eisenhower opposed Adlai Stevenson. The website encourages teachers and students to find their own paths through the collection of ads, which can be explored by specific issues and types. Users can compare and contrast ads within specific elections or across years, and now also remix historic ads using the AdMaker. Since the most recent edition of the site was launched in September 2008, it has logged more than a million visitors and more than 3,000 teachers have registered with the site and made use of its free, downloadable lesson plans. The Living Room Candidate is included on the National Endowment for the Humanities’ EDSITEment website and Verizon Thinkfinity (www.thinkfinity.org) as a recommended resource for teachers.

TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Stages, A Children’s Theatre Workshop, Inc., is hosting its second annual Princess Party on Sunday, August 15^th, from 2:00-5:00 PM at theRoss School Senior Building, Goodfriend Drive in East Hampton. The event celebrates Stages’ 16 years of producing live family theater on the East End of Long Island, and is a benefit for its scholarship program, which insures that Stages can remain accessible to all children.

Children ages 3 and older are invited to come and meet their favorite fairy tale princesses. There will be a special live musical performance by the Princesses, a Royal Raffle, Princess Beauty Boutique, and Princess Prizes for all. They will enjoy pastries and savories, provided by Cakeworks Studio, at the Princess Tea Table. To round out the festivities, Princess Paraphernalia and professional photographs with the Princesses will be available for purchase. Dressing like a princess is highly recommended!

Since 1994, Stages has touched the lives of thousands of children, those who perform onstage, as well as those who are its audience. Stageshas produced over 75 full-length musical productions in the After School Performance Workshop and in the popular Summer Stock program.Stages also offers a Creative Drama Class, which is an introduction to acting for younger children. Renowned for the quality and professionalism of its theatrical productions, Stages has become an important theatrical presence on the East End.

Bruce Beresford, the Academy Award-nominated director of Breaker Morant, Tender Mercies, Driving Miss Daisy, and Crimes of the Heart, will discuss his remarkable career as a director and screenwriter, in a conversation accompanied by clips from his finest films. This special evening will be presented by Museum of the Moving Image on Tuesday, August 3, at 7:00 p.m. at Scandinavia House. The conversation, moderated by Chief Curator David Schwartz, will be followed by a preview screening of Beresford's acclaimed new film Mao's Last Dancer (opening August 20).

Beresford, one of Australia’s most celebrated filmmakers, was a key member of the Australian film renaissance in the 1970s and 1980s. He was first nominated for an Oscar in 1980 for the script of Breaker Morant, then again in 1984 for directing Tender Mercies (which won Robert Duvall the Oscar for Best Actor); Driving Miss Daisy, which he directed, won the Best Picture Oscar in 1989. His new film, Mao’s Last Dancer, is based on the remarkable true story of Chinese-born ballet dancer Li Cunxin, a poverty-stricken boy who rises to international stardom as a world-class dancer. The film stars Chi Cao, a gifted dancer and principal at the Birmingham Royal Ballet making his impressive screen debut as Li. The cast also includes Bruce Greenwood, Kyle MacLachlan, Joan Chen and Amanda Schull.

The Silas Marder Gallery presents its Fifth Annual “Big Show”: 54 Artists, 162 Canvases

Bridgehampton, NY—THE FIFTH ANNUAL BIG SHOW EXHIBITION opens at The Silas Marder Gallery on Saturday, August 7, 2010. A reception will be held at the gallery on the same day from 5-9 PM.
The Big Show has become a favorite event for the local community,
generally attracting between 300-500 people. Each year, gallery owner Silas Marder invites over fifty national and international artists to participate, aiming for an eclectic mix of emerging and established talent. Participating artists are given three 8'' x 10” blank canvases, and are offered little direction other than being asked to “reflect on where they are in their careers.”

According to Marder, the event was fashioned after years of attending group openings at Ashawagh Hall in Springs, and coming to understand the importance of a gathering place to the local community. “I wanted to take that energy, raise the bar of the artwork, and exhibit it all in a visually organized way. The biggest challenge to a large-scale group show is in making it cohesive.”

The energetic charge to the show can be attributed to the fact that the work is new work produced virtually simultaneously by artists from different backgrounds, each effected by world events, career demands, and the particular guidelines for this exhibition. Because of all that these canvases share, their differences are more subtle than obvious. Despite sometimes extremely varied content, the works relate. “From painting to painting there’s a dialogue of texture and form,” Marder states. “Even the ones that don’t relate to each other play a part in the overall presentation. Once the installation is completed, the pieces seem to talk to each other. It’s like a lively dinner party where the guests might have conflicting opinions, but they are all expressing themselves very politely at exactly the same volume.”

Another intention of the show is to make connections, not only between artists, but also between communities. “One artist in the show might be from Bridgehampton, but the next artist might be from Italy or Portugal. The visiting artist might not ever have been on Long Island before, so their canvas becomes a sort of ambassador. And even though some artists are not “local,” the local artists—and the local community—are positively affected by their participation and presence.”

“I’ve lived here my whole life, and I grapple with this constantly—the concept of local,” Marder says. “Local is important, but locals need exposure. No one should remain sheltered or underexposed. Exposure comes in different forms: sometimes you go elsewhere; sometimes you invite others to you. The Big Show helps me think about here—what it means to live here, be here, choose to remain here. My job is to connect that “here” with a larger arts community. It’s like drawing concentric circles.”

Because of its diversity, the Big Show attracts collectors and dealers from the East End, Manhattan, and regions beyond. Established collectors are encouraged to try new artists and new collectors are offered an array of original works at accessible prices. “Some people buy all three pieces from a single artist, some buy single pieces on impulse to give different rooms of their house a different character. I have one couple that comes in every year just for portraits to add to their portrait collection. My friends in Sag Harbor have Big Show pieces hanging in quirky little niches in their house. This canvas size is actually a very cool scale for Sag Harbor houses.”

This year’s exhibition will feature works by Mary Heilmann, Robert Olsen, Judith Linhares, Elisa Rossi, as well as William King, Connie Fox, Pamela Collin Focarnio, Erica-Lynn Huberty, Mica I. Marder, Terry Elkins, Jennifer Cross, Cory Barber, Susan Zises and Oliver Peterson. The show will run through September 6, 2010. “It’s exactly the kind of show I’d want to go to,” Marder says. “These are original pieces, they are contemporary pieces, they are diverse in terms of style, and I could actually afford something. The Big Show is in no way a survey of the art world, but it’s definitely a mark.”

Some rose to the highest levels of United States government, but some spent time in debtors’ prison. Signer George Wythe was murdered by his nephew. Button Gwinnett was killed in a duel. Thomas Lynch, Jr. was lost at sea. And of course, Samuel Adams achieved fame as a patriot-brewer. Featuring a reversible dust jacket depicting a facsimile of the Declaration, Signing Their Lives Away provides an entertaining and enlightening narrative for history buffs of all ages.

"56 Days of Signers" Twitter Event:
From June 7 to August 2, 2010, we'll be tweeting short daily bios about the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence. Why 56 Days? Because the major events of that historic summer in 1776 took place between June 7 (the day Congress first motioned to break from Great Britain) and August 2 (the day the majority of Signers put their names on the historic document). We'll focus on one Signer per day during this period, posting multiple tweets about them during the day. You can read our daily updates at www.Twitter.com/56Signers. We will of course mention the historic sites we've met in our travels; if you work with a site associated with a Signer and want us to mention any special events coming up this summer, just drop us a line and we'll try to get it into one of the posts occurring throughout your Signer's day.

Mythology:

(Example: No Signer was ever "tortured by the British until he died." Preposterous.) If someone sends you an email to this effect during the summer, tell them to get the facts. And if you know of any media people who'd like the real scoop, kindly pass along our names. We enjoy setting the record straight.

"People Make Mistakes"

Thursday, June 10th at 8PM at the Old Stone House in Park Slope Brooklyn Reading Works presents "People Make Mistakes" an evening of fiction curated by Martha Southgate. Lauren Grodstein, author of A Friend of the Family, Danielle Evans, author of the upcoming short story collection Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self, and Martha Southgate, author of Third Girl From the Left will read.

Martha Southgate is the author of Third Girl from the Left, which was published in paperback by Houghton Mifflin in September 2006. It won the Best Novel of the year award from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. It was shortlisted for the PEN/Beyond Margins Award and the Hurston/Wright Legacy award. Her previous novel, The Fall of Rome, received the 2003 Alex Award from the American Library Association and was named one of the best novels of 2002 by Jonathan Yardley of the Washington Post. She is also the author of Another Way to Dance, which won the Coretta Scott King Genesis Award for Best First Novel. She now teaches in the Brooklyn College MFA program.

Lauren Grodstein's books include the novels A Friend of the Family and Reproduction is the Flaw of Love, and The Best of Animals, a story collection. Her pseudonymous Girls Dinner Club was a New York Public Library Book for the Teen Age. Her work has been translated into German, Italian, French, Turkish, and other languages, and her essays and stories have been widely anthologized.

Lauren teaches creative writing at Rutgers-Camden, where she helps administer the college's MFA program. She lives with her husband and son in New Jersey.

Danielle Evans was born in Northern Virginia in 1983. Her short fiction has appeared in Best American Short Stories 2008, The Paris Review, Phoebe, Black Renaissance Noire, and The L Magazine. She received a BA in Anthropology from Columbia University, an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and the Carol Houck Smith Fellowship from the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. She has taught in the creative writing program at Missouri State University, and has recently joined the faculty at American University in Washington, DC. She is currently editing her first short story collection, tentatively titled Before You Suffocate Your Own Fool Self, and working on a novel titled The Empire Has No Clothes. Both are forthcoming from Riverhead Books.

To my readers,

I am simply passing on the word to join the volunteers of SaveSagHarbor who are participating in the clean up for the recent oil spill. They are looking for donations of hair, fur and wool.

It is of course unimaginable to think that such a horrible environmental catastrophe would happen here, but it's not impossible. One small but positive step we decided to take is to mount a drive to help amass materials to help sop up the oil, and the best natural and biodegradable materials, as it turns out, are human hair, fur, and wool (and sadly, feathers). An organization called Matter of Trust, based in San Francisco, is gathering material and volunteers to create booms that are lowered into affected waters to try to make a dent in the damage, and so far almost 500,000 lbs have been collected. We've decided to help send it down there, but volunteers are needed to ask salons and dog-grooming centers for their clippings. They simply need to be collected and put into sealed plastic bags and cardboard boxes (a used shampoo box would be ideal) with no other garbage (don't want workers to cut themselves on other detritus) for shipment. If you are interested in calling your local salon or pet store and collecting hair and fur, and getting it to the address below, we'll take care of the shipment.
