Marian Fontana, author of A Widow's Walk; A Memoir of 9/11 and the upcoming, The Middle of the Bed, is presenting a group of wonderful writers, including Elissa Schappell author of Use Me and the upcoming Blueprints for Better Girls; Susan Karwoska, novelist, poet and editor of Teachers and Writers Magazine; poets Ellen Ferguson and Ira Goldstein and memoirist, Mila Drumke. Marian will be reading an excerpt from her new book.Marian writes: "Join us two nights before Valentine's as six talented authors tackle the profound, challenging, and even funny topic of love."

DAILY HANDS-ON ANIMATION WORKSHOPS AND SCREENINGS

From Monday, February 16 through Friday, February 20, 2009, during New York City public schools’ mid-winter recess, Museum of the Moving Image will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will offer daily family programs including animation workshops and screenings of Nick
Park’s charming stop-motion animated short, The Wrong Trousers, featuring the popular claymation characters Wallace and Gromit.
In addition to these special programs, families are invited to experience the Museum’s acclaimed interactive exhibition, Behind the Screen. Spanning two floors and 14,000 square feet, this innovative blend of more than 1,200 historical artifacts, art works, video clips, and interactive exhibits shows how moving images are made, marketed, and exhibited. Visitors are able to make animations, experiment with sound effects, and create flipbooks of themselves, among other activities. Museum educators present daily demonstrations of filmmaking techniques. Behind the Screen also features Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Defender, Tron, and ten additional playable classic video arcade games.

In this hour-long workshop, children learn how stop-motion animation works and make their very own animations which will be shared online. Materials fee: $5 per participant. Recommended ages: 8 and up. Call 718.777.6820 to make a reservation.

Screening: The Wrong Trousers
Daily at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., in Tut’s Fever Movie Palace
1993, 30 mins. Directed by Nick Park. In this Academy Award-winning animated short film by
Aardman Studios, the inventor Wallace and his beloved canine sidekick Gromit are threatened by the arrival of a larcenous penguin whose nefarious plans involve a pair of mechanical trousers. This film is suitable for all ages. The film will be screened in Tut’s Fever Movie Palace, a large-scale artwork and working theater that is part of Behind the Screen. Screening included with admission.
Suggested Admission
$5 for adults, senior citizens, college students, children 8–18.
Free for Museum members and children under 8.

Construction is currently underway on a major expansion of the Museum, designed by architect Thomas Leeser. Now allied in this new configuration these composer/performers have shared projects and stages during many years on the creative music scene such as: J D Parran's Omegathorp: Living City, Kevin Norton's "Breakfast of Champignons" ensemble, Peter Zummo's Noisy Meditation Band, Annea Lockwood's Thousand Year Dreaming, The DownTown Ensemble and Ninetet (Yoshi's) 1997, a six CD release by Anthony Braxton.
These shared musical experiences and associations with pioneering music in almost all genres invest Parran, Norton and Zummo with a musical affinity that virtually explodes in performances of their individual and collective compositions.

Ensemble Helacious will appear live on the WKCR Afternoon New Music, hosted by Ben Young on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, for most of the programs 3pm-6pm slot on 89.9 FM. Recordings of the collective as well as individual compositions will be aired along with other significant recordings featuring the members of this power trio.
J D Parran is a current participant in the Columbia University Radio Station WKCR New York Music Alive series, funded by the New York State Music Fund. The premiere broadcast of this career retrospective will air Sunday, March 1, 2009, 3pm-6pm on WKCR Radio.
