October 9-Janine Avril is a 31 year old Park Slope author. Her first book is Nightlight: A Memoir, from which she will read excerpts. Janine teaches high school English. She has been published in Topic Magazine, VelvetPark Magazine, The Los Angeles Times Magazine and is a blogger on Ourchart.com. October 16-Gregory Crosby spent his formative years in Las Vegas, where he was an art critic, columnist and cultural commentator. He created the Poets Bridge public art project in the Lewis Avenue Corridor in downtown Las Vegas, and its dedicatory poem, Long Shot, was subsequently reproduced in bronze and installed in the park. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from The City College, where in 2006 he won The Marie Ponsot Poetry Prize. His poems have appeared in Court Green, Jacket (sic), and The South Carolina Review. He will be reading with Yerra Sugarman, who received the 2005 PEN/ Joyce Osterweil Award for Poetry for her first book Forms of Gone, published by Sheep Meadow Press. She is the winner of "Discovery"/The Nation Prize, among many other honors. Her second book, The Bag of Broken Glass, is forthcoming in Spring, 2008, also from Sheep Meadow Press. She has taught creative writing at The City College of New York, Pratt Institute and New York University.

Sidney Lumet, the Academy Award-winning director whose acclaimed new movie Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead opens later this month, will be the subject of a tribute by the Museum of the Moving Image at The TimesCenter in Manhattan on Thursday, October 25, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman, co-stars of Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, will participate in a conversation with Lumet moderated by David Schwartz, the Museum’s Chief Curator. As part of the evening, scenes from Lumet’s greatest films will be shown, including Dog Day Afternoon, The Pawnbroker, 12 Angry Men, Serpico, and Network. Additional guest speakers will be announced.
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead opens in theaters October 26, from THINKFilm.
Lumet, who turned 83 this year, has been directing feature films for 50 years, since his debut with 12 Angry Men in 1957. He started his show business career as a child actor in Yiddish theater. He received a special Academy Award in 2005 for his “brilliant services to screenwriters, performers, and the art of the motion picture.” In 1985, he was honored by the Museum of the Moving Image at its first gala Salute.
The October 25 program is part of the Museum’s new monthly series at The TimesCenter. The program, Moving Image at The TimesCenter, features conversations and panel discussions with leading figures in film, television, and digital media. The next TimesCenter program, on November 9, will be an evening with Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee and his longtime collaborator James Schamus.
Museum of the Moving Image is dedicated to advancing the public understanding and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media. It does so by collecting, preserving, and providing access to the nation’s largest permanent collection of moving-image artifacts; screening significant films and other moving-image works; presenting exhibitions of artifacts, artworks, and interactive experiences; and offering educational and interpretive programs to students, teachers, and the general public. A major expansion and renovation, scheduled for completion in 2009, will add new film theaters, galleries, and an education center. More information at movingimage.us.
