Cecilia Dinio Durkin, founder of Women’s Work located in Cold Spring, NY was introduced to me by Louise Orlando, a good friend and former colleague from Scholastic. Louise and Cecilia know each other from their travels through Africa.

Ceciia and her husband Peter take folks on personally hosted Safari’s. They have one coming up with only 4 spaces left. If anyone is interested in going on a Safari to Botswana, click here for details and don’t forget to let me know if you’re going so we can post your adventures.
Cecilia’ business is also being recognized in the Hudson region for being an innovated business within the community. She writes:

WW is in the company of several very prestigious and long standing orgs/businesses and I'm so honored that my tiny little shop that's barely been around for two years would be noticed...

March 18- MFA student Marathon. Lynette Braxon is a professional actress, poet, playwright and storyteller who shares her stories, poems, songs and dance with everyone. She will be sharing the stage with Karen Clark, who received her BA from Barnard College in 1983, with a double major in English Literature and German. She spent much of her adult life in the retail book business, and owned a used bookshop, The Last Word. After closing the store, Karen started in the MA program at City College, and has since switched to the MFA Program. Last spring, she was thrilled to receive CCNY/CUNY’s Geraldine Moore award for short fiction. Lynn Dion is enrolled in the MFA program at City College with a focus on nonfiction and translation. She holds masters degrees in Music and Psychology, and teaches Introduction to Psychology and Writing for the Sciences at City College. Jacklyn Janeksela is an adjunct lecturer , completing her MFA from City College. She hopes to continue her studies at the Graduate Center, where she would like to study Comparative Literature and concentrate on translation. Currently she is working on her first novel and a collection of poetry. Laurel Kallen’s prior lives include speechwriting for former New York City mayor David Dinkins. She writes fiction, non-fiction and poetry, and her work has appeared in The Cardozo Arts and Entertainment Law Journal, Global City Review, Mothering and Montessori Life.

March 25-Cave Canen Presents: Celeste Doaks, Hallie S. Hobson, Juliet Howard and Nicole Sealy. Celeste Doaks’ work has been published in The Village Voice, Time Out New York and Quarterly Black Book Review. In 2005 she won the Archie D. and Bertha H. Walker scholarship to attend the Fine Arts Work center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. She is a three-time Regional Cave Canem fellow, and is co-founder of Speakeasy, a monthly Open Mic series in Brooklyn. Her only other obsessive passion is being an aunt to two 9-year old boys. Hallie S. Hobson is a playwright, and has been featured poet at the Louder/Arts program. Her theatrical works have been work shopped and presented at Brava!Theatre for Women in the Arts, the Mark Taper Forum Blacksmyths Writers’ Lab and A.S.K.,among others. Hallie received her bachelor’s degree from Yale, and an MFA in playwriting from UCLA, and currently makes her home in Harlem, New York. Juliet P. Howard is an MFA candidate at City College, and a Cave Canem fellow. She has been published in Promethean and The Portable Lower East Side. Juliet holds a BA in English from Barnard and a JD from Brooklyn Law School. She lives in Brooklyn with her life partner Norma Jean and their two sons, Jordon and Nicholas. Nicole Sealey is a journalist, editor and poet. Her interviews with acclaimed writers Sapphire, DJ Spooky and Patricia Smith can be found in Artists and Influence: Volume XXV, Studio and Mosaic. She is the Readings/Workshops Program Coordinator at Poets & Writers, and a Cave Canem fellow. Her poems have appeared in the anthologies Feeding the Soul: Black Music, Black Thought and His Rib, among others.

The Charismatic Megafauna String Orchestra is an old-time string band with a modern twist. Its members are Park Slope's own Bilger family--Burkhard Bilger on guitar, Jennifer Nelson on violin and accordion, Hans Bilger (14) on stand-up bass, and Ruby Bilger (10) on vocals and percussion. Their friend and spiritual leader Michael Abrams plays ukulele and the youngest Bilger--Evangeline (5)-- occasionally joins in on songs about chickens. The band plays an uproarious mixture of folk songs, novelties tunes, and rock-and-roll classics, filtered through their own sweet but slightly skewed sensibilities.

PRESENTS
‘AN EVENING WITH WONG KAR-WAI’
At The Times Center, Thursday, April 3, 7:00 p.m.

Wong Kar-wai, the influential and innovative Hong Kong director known for his stylish cosmopolitan romances, will be the focus of a special program of conversation and clips from his films. The program, presented by Museum of the Moving Image on Thursday, April 3, 2008, 7:00 p.m. at The Times Center in Manhattan, features a dialogue with the director, moderated by Chief Curator David Schwartz, and clips from Wong’s films including his new movie, My Blueberry Nights, In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express, and more.

Wong Kar-wai came to international attention at the 1989 Cannes International Film Festival Critics’ Week with his first film, As Tears Go By. His second feature, Days of Being Wild, a period romance set in 1960s Hong Kong, established him as a master with his luminous, visually exquisite scenes of neon, nighttime, and unrequited love. This film also marked the beginning of his collaboration with Australian cinematographer Christopher Doyle and the actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai. The 1994 cult hit Chungking Express was followed by Fallen Angels, films that capture the urban energy of Hong Kong before the return to Chinese rule. At the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, Wong was awarded Best Director for Happy Together, a gay romance set in Buenos Aires, and in 2000 at Cannes, his most acclaimed film, In the Mood for Love, was awarded Best Actor for Tony Leung. My Blueberry Nights, his first English language film—starring Norah Jones, Jude Law, Natalie Portman, David Strathairn, and Rachel Weisz—will be released by The Weinstein Company on April 4.

The Times Center , at 242 West 41 Street is the venue for a monthly series presented by the Museum of the Moving Image. Past guests have included Chris Matthews, Sidney Lumet, Ethan Hawke, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, Ang Lee, Joan Allen, James Schamus, Danny Glover, and John Sayles.

The renovation and expansion of Museum of the Moving Image has begun. The grand reopening is planned for December 2009. During construction, film screenings will be held off-site.
