MOVING IMAGE AND INDO-AMERICAN ARTS COUNCIL PRESENT ‘BOMBAY/NY: AN EVENING WITH MIRA NAIR AND SUKETU MEHTA’ Friday, November 7, 2008

Film director Mira Nair and author Suketu Mehta, two of the most prominent Indo-American cultural figures, will discuss their work and their perspectives on contemporary Bombay and New York City, in a special program presented in collaboration between Museum of the Moving Image and the Mahindra Indo-American Film Festival. The event, Bombay/NY: An Evening with Mira Nair and Suketu Mehta, will take place on Friday, November 7, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at The Times Center in Manhattan. The evening will include a conversation moderated by the Museum’s Chief Curator David Schwartz, a screening of Nair’s short film Migration, and a reading by Mehta.

Modern Bombay, home to twenty million, is one of the world’s most vibrant urban centers. Its official name is Mumbai, but as author Suketu Mehta writes, the city has "multiple aliases, as do gangsters and whores." Bombay, and its relationship to New York, will be the focus of this lively evening. Mira Nair’s acclaimed films include
The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding, and Salaam Bombay! Mehta, who was born in Calcutta and raised in Bombay and New York, is the author of Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found. The two are collaborating on several film projects. Nair’s short film Migration (2007, 18 mins.), starring Sameera Reddy and Irrfan Khan, looks at AIDS as a class leveler in modern society by following its transmission through interweaving stories linking urban and rural India. Mehta will read from Maximum City.

The program is part of the Mahindra Indo-American Film Festival, November 5-9, presented by the Indo-American Arts Council. The festival features New York and US premieres of independent Indian and diaspora films, panel discussions, and special events. For more information and a full schedule, visit www.iaac.us.

Tickets for
Bombay/NY: An Evening with Mira Nair and Suketu Mehta are $15 Museum and Indo-American Arts Council members / Free for Sponsor-level members and above / $25 non-members. Order tickets online at movingimage.us or by phone at 718.784.4520.

About Museum of the Moving Image
Museum of the Moving Image advances the public understanding and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media. It does so by collecting, preserving, and providing access to moving-image related artifacts; screening significant films and other moving-image works; presenting exhibitions of artifacts, artworks, and interactive experiences; and offering educational and interpretive programs to students, teachers, and the general public. Construction is currently underway on a major expansion of the Museum, designed by architect Thomas Leeser. The project entails a complete renovation of the existing first floor and construction of a three-story addition housing a new theater, screening room, galleries, and a multi-classroom education center. The Grand Opening of the expanded Museum is scheduled for winter 2009-10.

About Indo-American Arts Council

THERE ARE ONLY TWO WEEKS LEFT TO SEE IN CONFLICT!

HURRY AND BUY TICKETS TO THE SHOW THAT CRITICS HAVE PRAISED FOR ITS "ACHING ELOQUENCE" and "RAW POWER."

As Election Day nears, veterans are coming home to face continuing battles: PTSD, recurring nightmares, job loss, and other traumas. Many are getting lost in the VA system as they struggle to earn the right to financial compensation for their life-long mental and physical scars, while others are becoming political advocates in their own right, fighting for the future of servicemen and women across the country. Some would even choose to return to Iraq, eager to continue to serve their country, even though they have suffered enormously in war.

Now's your LAST CHANCE to hear the true stories from 17 soldiers who fought in Iraq, brought to life in Temple University's acclaimed production of "In Conflict". Their experiences are complex, compelling and real. The play will change the way you think about war.
