In response to Barack Obama's call for a National Day of Service on Monday, January 19th, we will be launching a special drive for donations to The Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry. At a time when so many of our neighbors are in need of food and basic supplies, we felt this was a good way to show our commitment to our community. We will be accepting donations of money, food, clothing and household supplies at Kathryn Levy's house, 244 Madison Street from 11-2 PM on the 19th. From 2-5 that afternoon we will be available to pick up donations at your location.
The Sag Harbor Food Pantry is most in need of donations of money, which can be either in cash or checks made out to The Sag Harbor Food Pantry and sent to them at 44 Union Street, PO Box 1241, Sag Harbor, NY 11963. All contributions are tax deductible. We would appreciate your letting us know what you have donated so we can track the effectiveness of this approach.
They are also in need of the following supplies:
Boxed cereal
Whole wheat sliced bread
Butter
Swiss or Munster cheese
Fresh produce
Poultry or meat
Canned tuna and salmon
Dried pasta
Winter coats
Dishes
Cleaning products
Bars of soap
Tissues and toilet paper
If you wish us to pick up a donation at your location on the 19th, please let us know by e-mail as soon as possible. Also, if you are interested in working with us on collecting donations, we would welcome any help.
The Sag Harbor Food Pantry would also like us to draw your attention to a food drive and fundraiser on Saturday, January 17th in support of all of our local food pantries. Museum of the Moving Image will present a special screening of In Between Days with a personal appearance by director So Yong Kim, on Friday, January 23, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, In Between Days traces the joys and risks of first love for a young Korean-American girl. Following the screening, Kim will participate in a discussion with the Museum’s Chief Curator David Schwartz.
The screening takes place at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, 31-10 Thomson Ave (at Van Dam Street), in Long Island City. Tickets are free for Museum members, $8 CUNY students and faculty, and $10 for non-members. Museum members may RSVP to 718.777.6810. In Between Days is So Yong Kim’s feature debut. On the threshold of maturity, Aimie (played by Jiseon Kim), a recent immigrant from South Korea, struggles to find her place in a new city, and her own emotional place in the world. She is in love with her best friend Tran (Taegu Andy Kang) who seems to prefer more “Americanized” girls. A.O. Scott in The New York Times wrote: “In Between Days, the sensitive, modest, thrillingly self-assured first feature by So Yong Kim, was one of the standouts of the 2006 Sundance Film Festival--exactly the kind of thoughtful, independent work one hopes to find there and too rarely does.” (U.S., 2006, 82 mins.)
So Yong Kim was born in Pusan, South Korea and immigrated to the United States when she was twelve. She studied painting, performance, and video art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she earned her MFA. She has made several experimental short films including A Bunny Rabbit, shot by renowned cinematographer Christopher Doyle. In 2006, Kim was featured as one of the “25 Filmmakers to Watch” in Filmmaker Magazine. Kim’s latest film, Treeless Mountain, which premiered at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival and just won the Best Feature Film award at the Dubai International Film Festival, will open in April at Film Forum.
